Tired of Reading Glasses? RLE Offers a Permanent Fix.

What is Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) Surgery?

Refractive Lens Exchange is a type of vision correction surgery that involves using femtosecond laser and ultrasound to remove the natural lens of the eye and replacing it with an intraocular lens (IOL) to minimize the use of glasses and contacts.

Who is a Good Candidate for Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)?

  • Any patient who is over age 45 who is nearsighted, farsighted, or has astigmatism
  • Want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contact lenses
  • Have early clouding of the lens (dysfunctional lens syndrome)-which is relatively uniform after age 50
  • Anyone who is nearsighted, farsighted or has astigmatism who has early cataracts (clouding of the lens)
  • Want to treat presbyopia with a multifocal implant
  • Are looking for an alternative to LASIK

What Are the Risks Associated with Refractive Lens Exchange(RLE)?

Any surgical procedure comes with inherent risk. Although very uncommon, risks associated with RLE are similar to that of cataract surgery including bleeding, swelling, infection, retinal detachment, and capsular opacification. During your pre-operative consultation, your doctor will answer any questions and thoroughly explain these and any other risks associated with RLE.

Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) Available

At Beach Eye Medical Group, we go beyond standard cataract surgery by offering Premium IOL packages designed to reduce or eliminate your need for glasses. Each package includes advanced lens options, astigmatism correction, and complimentary laser vision correction (LASIK or PRK, if needed) to help you achieve your best possible vision.

Multifocal IOL's

Multifocal IOLs like the Odyssey, Panoptix Pro, and the Envy offer excellent near and distance vision without glasses, but may cause slight nighttime halos/glare when driving at night.

Customizable IOL's

Light Adjustable Lenses offer adjustable vision where the shape of your new IOL can be changed after surgery simply by shining a special light on the lens. This offers unparalleled customization and is ideal for the highest quality of vision. This lens however does not offer the type of range that other lenses do but may be ideal for those looking for some form of monovision (one eye for distance and one eye for intermediate/near.)

Toric Astigmatism Correcting IOL's

Toric lenses can help correct astigmatism, which is the result of an oval-shaped cornea that distorts vision. They offer high clarity with a single focal point and limited range in vision.

EDOF (Extended Depth of Focus) IOL’s

EDOF (Extended Depth of Focus) IOL’s are highly precise lenses made from hydrophilic acrylic that enhance distance and intermediate vision, offering improved visual quality and range.
